Instagram is rolling out a new update which alerts users when a photo is created with Ai. This feature will help users distinguish between artificial vs authentic content, in the hope of encouraging authenticity and genuineness.
How Does Instagram’s AI-Generated Photo Alerts Update Work?
Instagram scans the metadata of the photos you upload to determine if it is a real image or ai generated. If Instagram determines the photo is Ai, they will automatically add a label on it which says AI info. Alternatively, if you want your audience to know your photo is Ai generated, you can also manually add the Ai info label. So what does this look like in action? Let’s take a look at one of Blackpink singer, LISA’s, posts:
As you can see, the AI info label is placed where you would typically see the location. When you click on the label, Instagram offers further information on generative AI and their initiative.
Why Authenticity Matters on Social Media
As users increasingly seek genuine connections online, platforms like Instagram are focusing more on ensuring content shared on their platform is authentic and trustworthy. This push for authenticity started during the COVID-19 pandemic, a time where face-to-face connections became limited and people turned to online spaces for more human-like interactions. Users want relatable content and heavily edited or AI-generated photos often feel fake and unrelatable, failing to engage users on a personal level.
Through this update, Instagram wants to promote honesty and transparency, encouraging more authentic sharing and genuine interactions on the platform.
The Downside of the AI-Generated Photo Alerts Update
Although this update is a great step towards more genuine and authentic content, it isn’t without its drawbacks.
One significant drawback is the potential for false positives, where content that isn’t AI-generated or heavily edited is mistakenly flagged. This can happen with highly stylized photos or those edited using traditional methods that might resemble AI effects. A brand’s online presence relies on being genuine and trustworthy, so being mistakenly flagged can damage their reputation by making their work seem inauthentic or unoriginal.
Certain industries are more likely to face challenges with the AI-Generated Photo Alerts update due to the nature of their content. Art-related industries, such as makeup artists (MUAs), fashion designers, photographers, and artists, often produce highly stylized and edited images that could be mistaken for AI-generated content.
Brands and individuals in these fields can address any misunderstandings by letting their audience know if their content is accidentally flagged as Ai or posting behind the scenes content to show their content is real.
We assume Instagram will need to create a specific appeal process solely for content mistakenly flagged as AI-generated as the update becomes more widely used.
How to Align Your Social Media Strategy with Instagram’s New Update
This update means that brands who use AI tools to generate or heavily edit images will need to be more transparent about their content. For some, this may require a shift in strategy, focusing more on organic content creation rather than relying on AI-generated visuals. Below are a couple of tips on how can you align your brand’s social media strategy with this new update:
- Produce more organic content
Focus on content that is genuine and relatable in order to humanize your brand. For example, share behind the scenes content to give viewers a glimpse into day to day operations or the creative thought process behind your product development. Avoid overly polished content such as heavily edited photos and vidoes and instead share unfiltered moments. You can also leverage user generated content to promote your products. Ask your followers to share their thoughts on your product or an important topic related to your brand and repost on your page.
Focusing on authentic, organic content not only aligns with Instagram’s push for transparency but also offers double the value by fostering conversations, which ties into another recent update: Instagram’s shift to prioritize comments over likes. To learn more about this update, read our blog.
- Be transparent with your audience
Honesty is key on social media, especially as a brand. You need to be honest with your audience to build trust and a loyal audience. If you are using AI tools to edit or create content, mention that in either your stories or captions. Provide content on why and how you use these tools to help your audience better understand your intentions.
